5” x 7” , oil and pastel on canvas
“from the moment when, staring into the eyes of a chimpanzee, I saw a thinking, reasoning personality looking back.”
― Jane Goodall
The first time Goodall came in contact with a caged ape, she teared up. Muse is a portrait of this curious ape, caged and helpless. At first glance, especially if you’re turning around the corner, Muse is sure to scare you. If you’ve never seen one in real life, fascination will pull you closer to examine the ape, his balding head, sulken face, and his distinct features that make you worry that he might jump out of the canvas if you get too close.
